TAC PRESS RELEASE WORLD AIDS DAY, 1 DECEMBER 2001 INTERFAITH SERVICE JUSTICE EDWIN CAMERON TO SPEAK TAC TO CALL FOR AIDS TO BE MADE AN EMERGENCY The TAC in Gauteng will mark World AIDS Day by holding an Interfaith Service between 12h00 - 14h00 at the Catholic Cathedral, Cnr End Street and Saratoga Avenue. The service will be attended by a support group of people living with HIV, together with representatives of Muslim, Hindu, Catholic, Buddhist and other faiths. There will also be speakers representing the trade union movement, including NUM General Secretary, Gwede Mantashe and Cosatu Deputy President Joyce Pekane. The Interfaith Service will be preceded with a march from Library Gardens (Beyers Naudé Square) to the Cathedral. The marchers will be carrying coffins and crosses marking the drastic impact of the epidemic because of the absence of effective intervention by government. This begins at 10h30. The purpose of the Interfaith Service is to highlight the emergency caused by the AIDS epidemic and to call for a response that recognizes the importance of both treatment and prevention.
