Dear all The South African Cabinet has announced -- to be confirmed -- that rape survivors will be able to access antiretrovirals for post-exposure prophylaxis. TAC warmly applauds this decision by government. The decision to provide antiretrovirals to rape survivors who request it after counselling at public hospitals will give comfort to all those who suffer sexual assault, but particularly, women and children. This is a victory for civil society and the Department of Health HIV/AIDS Directorate. It creates an area of consensus between AIDS activists and government. TAC appeals to government to use the same rationale to develop pilot treatment programmes with antiretrovirals in our country. We also urge government to immediately drop their appeal to the Constitutional Court on Nevirapine. We salute all the activists who worked for access to antiretrovirals for rape survivors in particular GRIP, the doctors and counsellors of Mpumalanga. We acknowledge the work of Rape Crisis, POWA, Charlene Smith and others. Regards Zackie Achmat (TAC Chairperson)
